Why 'Intensity' Is More Specific Than You Think

Ask ten people what training intensity means and you'll likely get ten different answers — lifting heavy, running fast, sweating a lot, feeling the burn. In exercise science, though, intensity has a precise meaning: it describes how hard your body is working relative to its maximum capacity during a given effort.

The confusion arises because intensity is measured differently depending on the type of training. A strength coach, a running coach, and a cardiologist may each use a valid measurement system — and each system tells you something the others don't. Understanding these frameworks lets you read workout instructions accurately and train in a purposeful, sustainable way.

The Three Main Ways Intensity Is Measured

1. Percentage of One-Rep Max (%1RM)

In resistance training, intensity is most commonly expressed as a percentage of your 1RM — the heaviest weight you can lift for exactly one full repetition. Lifting at 85% of your 1RM is considered high intensity; lifting at 50% is low intensity. This system is precise and directly tied to the stimulus your muscles receive.

2. Heart Rate Zones

In cardiovascular training, intensity is often measured as a percentage of your maximum heart rate (MHR). Trainers typically divide effort into zones — for example, Zone 2 (roughly 60–70% of MHR) targets aerobic base building, while Zone 4 (80–90%) trains high-intensity endurance. Your estimated MHR is commonly approximated as 220 minus your age, though this formula has meaningful individual variation.

3. Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE)

The Rate of Perceived Exertion scale — originally developed by Swedish physiologist Gunnar Borg — asks you to rate how hard an effort feels, typically on a scale of 1 to 10 (or 6 to 20 in the original Borg scale). An RPE of 7 might mean you're working hard but could sustain the effort for several more minutes; an RPE of 9 is near-maximal. RPE is subjective but surprisingly well-correlated with objective measures like heart rate and oxygen consumption when used consistently.

Training Intensity

A measure of how hard the body is working relative to its maximum capacity during exercise. It can be expressed as a percentage of maximum effort, a heart rate range, or a subjective rating of exertion.

One-Rep Max (1RM)

The maximum amount of weight a person can lift for a single full repetition of a given exercise. Used as a benchmark to set intensity percentages in strength training programs.

A defined range of heart rate expressed as a percentage of maximum heart rate, used to target specific cardiovascular training adaptations such as aerobic base or high-intensity endurance.

Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE)

A subjective scale used to rate how hard an exercise effort feels, typically from 1 (very light) to 10 (maximal). It correlates meaningfully with objective physiological measures and is accessible without any equipment.

Maximum Heart Rate (MHR)

The highest number of times the heart can beat per minute during maximum physical exertion. It is commonly estimated using age-based formulas, though individual variation is significant.

Putting It Into Practice

Most workout programs blend all three systems. A strength program might prescribe sets at 75% 1RM with an RPE cap of 8, ensuring lifters don't push to failure every session. An endurance plan might specify heart rate zones for easy runs while using RPE to manage interval efforts on days when heart rate data feels unreliable (such as after poor sleep or during heat).

The practical takeaway: when you see intensity referenced in a workout, check which system it's using. Applying a heart rate zone cue to a weightlifting set, or a %1RM instruction to a cardio session, will lead to mismatched effort and potentially stalled progress.

If you're newer to structured training, RPE is often the most accessible starting point — it requires no equipment and builds body awareness over time. As you gain experience, layering in heart rate monitoring or periodically testing your 1RM gives you objective data to complement your perceived effort.
